After practicing no-till for nearly 50 years, the Fulpers have learned a few tricks along the way. Not only are they seasoned storytellers of their journey, but so is their equipment which has also evolved as well. Their corn planter - Kinze 3660 is uniquely outfitted without a coulter wheel, which is designed to agitate the soil prior to the opening disks. They’ve found that the coulter was creating a false bottom in the seed trench which reduced seed to soil contact, a vital component for proper seed germination.
Additionally, their planter is equipped with Yetter Crop Devastators, which work to crimp and mat the cover crop when planting green. This retrofit has been effective in maintaining soil moisture, reducing weed presence throughout the season and helped to build resilience into their cropping system.
